Freelance Photography Project: Documenting the #Pulse Orlando Memorial
The shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando shook many in the community to the core. The shooting occurred just steps from my office, and only a few blocks from the Orlando Health main campus. I undertook this Pulse Orlando Memorial photography project as a way to photo-document the Pulse nightclub and the area surrounding Lake Beauty leading up to the formal cross relocation ceremony at ORMC.
PULSE Memorial Project
After the PULSE nightclub shooting in Orlando on June 12, 2016, a number of memorials were formed at various locations. The first began to take shape near the Orlando Health sign at Lake Beauty, just outside the Orlando Regional Medical Center emergency room entrance where many victims were taken the morning of the shooting.
I visited the Lake Beauty PULSE memorial, as well as the club itself a number of times in order to document the memorial items being placed at both sites. The photos you see in the gallery below are from three different visits:
- PULSE Nightclub on the morning of June 22nd, 2016.
- Lake Beauty / Orlando Health on the evening of June 30th, 2016.
- Lake Beauty / Orlando Health on the morning of July 12th, 2016.
The final visit listed above was from the Orlando Health and Orange County History Center’s ceremony to relocate the 49 wooden crosses from Lake Beauty to the History Center, just a few miles away. Below are the photo galleries from these three visits.

As a community, we’re all trying to recover from and deal with the shooting at PULSE Nightclub on June 12, 2016. It was incredibly difficult photographing the 49 wooden crosses – one for each victim killed during the attack. It didn’t sink in just how many people lost their lives that day until I undertook this project.
