Polaroid CUBE Review Update: 12/10/15 - New Firmware Released

A firmware update for the Polaroid CUBE+ was just released. The update was a bit confusing to install at first, but I was able to get it applied. I have noticed significant improvement in the performance of the CUBE when viewing / recording video through the app on my smart phone (Android Galaxy S6). In the previous version, the responsiveness of the video on the phone was very slow, often lagged behind the movement of the CUBE and wasn't very clear. Most of those issues appear to be resolved in this firmware release.

Dadtography is pleased to be working with the Polaroid brand on their CUBE+ product. If you haven't seen the CUBE (af) yet, I highly recommend you check it out. The original CUBE and the most recent CUBE+ are small, square-shaped action video cameras priced extremely affordably under $150 USD.

Isn't it time you stop using old and outdated photo editing software? For years, I used the software everyone told me I "should" be using. It was difficult to learn, slow and complicated.

Then I found the Aurora HDR photo editing suite. Aurora HDR helps me edit my photos in minutes, producing professional results with less time, less effort and less of a learning curve.

Features of the Polaroid CUBE+

For such a small package (a mere 35mm cube), the Polaroid CUBE+ comes with quite a few features. The CUBE takes still photos via a 6 megapixel digital camera as well as videos in various modes and resolutions.

From full high definition 1920 x 1080 resolution videos, to time-lapse and even a slow-motion mode, the CUBE makes it pretty easy to capture different styles of videos in HD.

CUBE+ Interface & Setup

The CUBE+ has an extremely simplistic layout. This may actually throw some people off at first, when it comes to connecting to WiFi, snapping a photo or taking videos. The CUBE+ App isn't technically required to use the camera, but I consider it a must-have for instant feedback on the photos and videos you take. The CUBE+ doesn't have its own display screen, so the only way to view photos or videos aside from downloading them to your computer is to sync with your smartphone via WiFi and the app.

I read a few other reviews that indicated connecting the CUBE+ to a smartphone via WiFi was confusing and difficult. I found it rather simple, but somewhat specific in what you must do.

  1. Insert a memory card into the back of the CUBE+ in the provided micro SD slot.
  2. Power on the CUBE+ by pressing and holding the button on the top for 3 seconds.
  3. Disconnect your smartphone device from any WiFi networks it may already be connected to (important).
  4. Turn on the CUBE+ WiFi by pressing and holding the WiFi button for 3 seconds.
  5. Connect your smartphone's WiFi to the CUBE+ "network".
  6. Open the CUBE+ app on your smartphone.
  7. Click the option to Connect to the CUBE+ device. The first time connecting I was asked to enter my password - the default is typically 1234567890.

At this point, your smartphone should be connected to the CUBE+ via the app.

First Impressions of the CUBE+

First impressions mean a lot, especially when it comes to photography equipment. Easy of use, build quality, features and overall performance in the first few hours of use can really shape your opinion of the device.

Overall, I was actually impressed by the CUBE+. I found it to be a well-built, solid yet elegant camera. It feels super sturdy to me (I haven't done a drop test yet). It's small enough to easily carry around with you just about anywhere you go. With some of the available accessories, the potential of this device really expand. My personal favorite accessory is the waterproof case (affiliate link).

I can honestly say that the Polaroid CUBE+ feels like a higher quality product than I expected.

After using the CUBE for a full 24 hours now, I can honestly say that it feels like a higher quality product than I expected, especially given the price point. The CUBE+ won't replace my full-size camera any time soon, but it makes for a really good, reasonably-priced action camera that's poised to compete with others in that market.
