I have to admit, I'm kinda enjoying these Cold Brew Connoisseur posts. If nothing else, it's prompting me to try new coffees! Next up is my review of Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha, from concentrate.

This cold brew is definitely way different from the others. So far, the two other cold brew coffees I reviewed (STōK Cold Brew Protein and Califia Mocha) were both pre-mixed with a creamer.

The big difference with Chameleon is that it comes from concentrate, and you have to mix creamer, milk or other sweetener into it yourself.

From concentrate cold brews can provide some flexibility and options for you on one hand. They can also add a little effort (and cost) as well. Let's jump into the review, shall we?

What is Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha Coffee?

Cool mosaic Chameleon, bro.

Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha is one of many products offered by cold brew "connoisseurs" Chameleon Cold Brew, an Austin, TX based company that's been making coffee since 2010. Chameleon is known for a few things: it's the first fair trade and organic cold brew company in the United States and it won "Best Coffee" in 2014 from BevNet, a beverage industry publication.

(Un?)fortunately, it looks like many other "independent" cold brew coffee companies, Chameleon was gobbled up by the mega-brand Nestlé USA in late 2017.

Yeah, I honestly don't know if that's a good or a bad thing, to be honest. It looks like, despite the acquisition, it's mostly been "business as usual" for Chameleon. I'm sure it will be as long as they're doing well and selling their coffee.

How is the packaging and presentation of Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha coffee?

A glass jar definitely sets Chameleon apart.

It looks like Chameleon went the route of bottling in glass jars for its retail cold brew concentrate coffees. With 32oz of coffee inside, on one hand it's a cool feel (get it? It's refrigerated. Sorry, dad joke). On the other hand, it's a glass jar.

I'm honestly a bit intimidated when holding it. What if I drop it? What if it breaks and spills my coffee all over the floor? When it's cold and full of coffee, it sweats pretty easy in the Florida heat and humidity. It's a bit slippery!

My unnatural fears of breaking glass aside, I do like the re-usability of the Chameleon glass jars. The world is a better place with a little less plastic in it, if you ask me!

Okay, but does Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha (concentrate) coffee taste good?

Taste of Chameleon Cold Brew comes from a different perspective than that of other ready-to-drink cold brew coffees we've reviewed so far. Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha is a concentrated cold brew coffee that contains no sugar and only 10 calories.

The flavor of Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha is great. It's a strong coffee with a bold flavor, even when diluted using a creamer or milk. The flavor isn't drowned out, even when you add something to it, so that tells me they got the formula right when it comes to this coffee.

Chameleon Mocha is definitely not sweet, despite the "mocha" flavor. If you're looking for a sweetness to your coffee, you'll definitely have to add something to get there with Chameleon. That said, I like this as an option if most other cold brews out there are too sweet for your taste. With cold brews from concentrate, you get to choose what you add and how much.

How does the nutrition information stack up in Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha coffee?

Cold brew in concentrated form means powerful flavor and very few calories.

Let's start by reviewing the actual nutrition information pulled from the bottle of a Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha.

For those of you that can't see the photo (AMP visitors), here's the breakdown of nutrition info:

Chameleon Cold Brew is not really a significant source of anything, except for caffeine (see below for more on this). There's very few calories, zero sugar and really not much of anything else (except bold coffee flavor, of course).

If you're interested in the specific ingredient list, they keep that pretty simple as well: filtered water, organic coffee and natural flavor.

...a Chameleon Cold Brew made the list of the 8 Most Dangerous Caffeinated Products

Does the caffeine in Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha coffee make you jittery?

Make no mistake about it, Chameleon Cold Brew is a strong coffee. Like, really strong.

In fact, a Chameleon Cold Brew made the list of "8 Most Dangerous Caffeinated Products" not too long ago. It's the first actual coffee on this list as well.

According to the How It's Made page on the Chameleon website, their 10 oz ready-to-enjoy products have 230mg of caffeine, while the the concentrate products like this one have 208mg of caffeine in only 6 ounces.

In other words, be sure to mix your Chameleon Cold Brew with something and don't attempt to drink the bottle in one sitting.

Just a few final thoughts about Chameleon Cold Brew Mocha coffee.

I really enjoyed trying this coffee. Again, it's a great option if you're really particular about the flavor (and sugar content) of your coffee.

If most ready-to-drink cold brews are too sweet, you should try this coffee. Ultimately, you'll be able to get the perfect mix of coffee and cream, milk or other "mixer" of your choice.

The caffeine content is pretty high, and do not forget that it's a concentrated coffee, so be careful how much you drink. If you're caffeine sensitive, you should definitely steer clear of Chameleon Cold Brew.

We will likely keep Chameleon in our regular rotation of cold brews in our house, for an extra "shot" of coffee into our already sweet line up.
